What is your favorite part of serving on the Board of Directors?
My favorite part about serving on the Board of Directors is seeing the direct impact that the organization has on students. I am able to see firsthand how the services change their lives.
What influenced you to serve on the Board for the Dream Team?
My first job out of college 17 years ago was as the Dream Team’s grant accountant. I love the mission of the organization and have continued to be involved with them since I worked for them.
What does it mean to you (personally and/or professionally) to serve on the Board?
Growing up in a small farming community, I saw that the only way to make a different life for myself was by going to college. Education is one of the best ways to change your life and the lives of your family. Since that is the Dream Team’s mission, they hit my values at my core.
What advice would you give a Dream Team student who one day wants to work in your field?
Stick with it! It is a field that has many, many roads to take, from public to private, and non-profit to education routes. There are so many things you can do with an Accounting degree.
What did you study in college?
My undergraduate work was in Accounting and Economics, and my Master’s is in Business Administration.
What inspired you to work in your field?
After working at the Dream Team for my first accounting job, I was hooked on working for education. I moved onto UNC and now Aims to continue that work. I have worked in non-profit education/higher education for 17 years now.
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
Spending time with family, friends, and family pets.
Kara also participated in our 12 Days of Dream Team Series and shared her point of view as a monthly donor! Watch it here.
