Starting summer with a bang!

June brings the summer program and the advisors’ last day of work. This year, our high school summer program took us to Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. 50 high school students got the opportunity to stay overnight in a campus dorm, eat like a college student (AKA: lots of ice cream, snacks, and soft drinks!), explore Scottsbluff, and talk to WNCC’s Residence Life, Financial Aid, and TRiO offices.

The middle school program boarded two buses this year to take students from both the Dream Team and K8 Programs to three days of exciting destinations. Students explored ancient geology and careers in paleontology at Dinosaur Ridge, experienced life on a smaller scale at Tiny Town, toured Aims Community College’s Greeley and Windsor campuses, and imagined life as a zookeeper at the Denver Zoo. Besides “When is lunch?” the most common questions we got were things like, “Can I run around the Aims gym?” (Answer: yes, if you are a student there!) and “How do I work at a zoo?” (Answer: study zoology or veterinary science!).

After two weeks of fulfilling and exhausting field trips, the advisors packed up all their paperwork, completed all their data entry, and headed out for a summer of relaxation and excitement. From baseball games and cannonballs in the local pool to vacations with family and trips to Europe, our advisors stay busy all summer exploring their community before returning in August.
